Straight Pipe Rules for DN15 Diesel Installations
Oval gear meters are less sensitive to flow profile than turbines. Still, swirl and pulsation eat up gear life. We ask for 10D straight pipe upstream and 5D downstream. For DN15, that means 150 mm before the meter and 75 mm after it. No elbows, valves, or pumps inside that length. Keep the pipe internal diameter at exactly 15 mm. Do not use a reducer that creates a dead pocket. We have seen a diesel generator OEM in Thailand skip this rule. The meter over-registered by 1.2% until they cut out a close-coupled elbow.
Filtration and Air Removal Are Not Optional
Diesel from an oil drum or day tank carries rust, sand, and wax particles. A single grain of sand locks an oval gear pair. Fit a full-flow Y strainer with 100 mesh (0.15 mm) screen directly before the inlet. Install a differential pressure gauge across the strainer so operators know when to clean it. Air bubbles are another killer. A tiny bubble adds slip and spikes the pulse output. Mount an air eliminator at the high spot of the upstream piping. Temperature, Pressure, and Viscosity Limits

Signal Wiring and Noise Rejection
Use a 3-core shielded cable for the pulse or 4-20 mA signal. Ground the shield at the panel side only. Keep signal cables at least 300 mm away from VFD motor cables. Can I install the DN15 oval gear meter right after a gear pump?
No. A gear pump creates pressure pulsations. Place at least 10D of straight pipe and a pulsation dampener between the pump and the meter.
Do I need a straight run before a positive displacement meter?
You need less than a turbine meter. Still, 10D upstream and 5D downstream cut swirl and protect gear life. Most engineers skip this part and regret it later.
What happens if air passes through the meter?
The meter counts air as diesel volume. That gives a reading higher than actual fuel used. Air also dries the gears and causes galling. An air eliminator solves both.
